NEW :  RESULTS 2011 !

Duration : Ringing took place between Sunday 31st July and Sunday 21st August 2011

Methods :
8 x 36m net runs, equally shared between two separate ringing stations within the reed beds (within the hunting reserve on the north bank of the Seine), for the Aquatic Warbler Programme (ACROLA)
1 x 36m net at each ringing station, considered separately from the ACROLA programme and intended to generate additional birds for training purposes (STAGE) (using a mixed species tape lure)
Additional ringing activities to support the training aims of the Camp (woodland, garden, Swallow pulli)

Ringers : Pascal Provost (MdE), Matthieu Lorthois (CSNHN), Gilles Le Guillou (MdE), Laurent Demongin, Bruno Dumeige, Andrew Moss, George Candelin.

Helpers  : Including qualified British ringers not holding a French permit: Gaspard Bernard, Elodie Rémond, Olivier Gore, Gerry Thomas, Paul Ashworth, Alan Heath, Kevin Henderson, Chris Batty, Denise Lamsdell, Chris Lamsdell, Pierre-André Moreau, Virginie Radola, Thomas Herault, Karen Moss, Michel Simon, Anne Parisot, François Boulet, Vivien Chouquet, Fabrice Gallien, Coralie Bonjean, Yannick Jacob, Emmanuel Schmitt, Thomas Couet, Vincent Paillaud and others who passed through the Camp…

Thanks to all the ringers and helpers for all their efforts (including having to set up and completely take down all nets every day following the theft of some nets early on in the month and coping with the vagaries of the weather…), for their motivation and their good humour!

TOTAL (not including birds caught as part of the ringer's qualification exams) : 3998 birds ringed of 30 species
Ten most numerous species:

Cetti's Warbler                               20                                          14
Marsh Warbler                               11                                            6

Overall it has been a poor year for Warblers. Thanks to the mixed-species tape lure used with the STAGE net runs good numbers of Bluethroats (70 per net run compared to 20 per net run for the ACROLA programme) and Savi's Warblers (60 per net run compared with 10 per net run for the ACROLA programme) were caught. The ringing sites within the reed beds were exceptionally dry this year and with little in the way of insect food (there was a notable absence of aphids).

Aquatic Warbler (programme ACROLA): the passage of first-year birds was later than usual, commencing around the 13th August, with the peak numbers being encountered on the 15th and 16th August, with 24 birds ringed. There were hundreds of birds passing through the estuary during this period!
Out of the total of 82 Aquatic Warblers ringed this year (70 as part of the ACROLA programme and 12 as part of the STAGE programme), 6 birds were ringed during the final morning of the Camp on the 21st August!
One Aquatic Warbler, ringed on the 17th August at one of the Camp's ringing sites, was recaptured in the Bay of Saint-Michel (200km away) by my twin brother on 20th August! The birds must also be confused :-) We're still waiting for further recoveries….  !!
The areas of the Seine Estuary in which birds were captured are actually their resting sites. see recent articles in Alauda and Acta Ornithologica : http://www.maisondelestuaire.net/DocTelechargeables/article/phragmite_aquatique2.pdf
http://www.maisondelestuaire.net/DocTelechargeables/article/phragmite_aquatique1.pdf

Our studies ( have shown that birds move from these areas towards the feeding areas (where vegetation is lower), situated around the edges of the hunters' pools (at least 50 favourable sites exist each year),  the edges of clearings and along the edge of the River Seine (in bullrushes). The results from Raphael and Julien (in particular) in West of France in august 2011 are remarkable (numbers of birds ringed, indicators) and show a direct relationship between the ringing areas and the feeding areas (and resting areas where there are no reeds), which concentrate the Aquatic Warbler according to its unique ecological needs.

The ACROLA programme appears within the National Action Plans (PNA) and, on each site, we require a simple description of the landscape to include the dominant plant species on the site (fescue grass, rushes or other) and don't forget to take several photos of the site. These specific submissions for the PNA, together with any photographs, should be sent to Arnaud arnaud.leneve@bretagne-vivante.org  and a copy sent to Frédéric Jiguet fjiguet@mnhn.fr. Any ringing site not complying with these strict requirements will not have its results included in the overall analysis of the ACROLA programme.

Well done to everyone who has contributed to this year's ACROLA programme: 1000 birds ringed in France represents 2% of the world population!

Dear all !

Welcome in Normandy in the Seine Estuary International Ringing Camp !

Since 1983, more than 80.000 birds have been captured of 83 different species and subspecies. A special attention is lent to the Aquatic warber, Acrocephalus paludicola. The most endangered species in Continental Europe...

You'll find folders with pictures about the ringing camp 2007 and 2008. Some about birds, a few about life during the ringing camp, workshops, birdwatching...

Bonjour !
